The Mudstone 35L is a multi-sport technical pack designed to be the "one-bag" solution for the mountains. Built to bridge the gap between backcountry skiing, alpine climbing, and ultra light backpacking, it combines high-performance features with a streamlined, clutter-free aesthetic.
The Problem
I knew there was a problem when I began looking for a backpack for backcountry skiing, then one for alpine climbing and I was also in need of a all around hiking pack for day hikes and short backpacking trips.
Outdoor gear is often hyper-specialized. You have a ski pack with specific straps, a climbing pack with a haul-bag shape, and a hiking pack with external mesh. As someone who moves between these disciplines, I found myself constantly compromising—either using a bag that lacked the right carry-system for skis or a bag that was overkill for a day hike.
The Objective
My goal was to design the last bag I would ever need. I set out to build a 35L rolltop backpack that was ready to take on anything I threw at it. It was vital for it to be as barebone as it could while not compromising its technical function.

Integrated systems for rope management and ski carry that disappear when not in use. Mesh front and internal pocket for easy access to your gear.
Versatile
Minimalist look to keep a clean aesthetic. Use of technical fabrics and hardware to elevate the look. All black fabric for a timeless look.

Capacity was an important factor in designing the bag. It needed enough capacity to fill the sweet spot of not too big or too small.
Material choices
VX21 X-Pac is built with a waterproof laminate construction and reinforced X-PLY® pattern, which provide exceptional tear strength and reliable weather protection. Its inherent stiffness also allows the backpack to maintain its shape under load, ensuring a structured and comfortable carry.
VX21 Ripstop X-Pac
UltraGrid was used for components requiring a softer feel, as its woven structure allows for the easy manipulation of pockets and cinch closures. This flexibility is paired with exceptional durability, utilizing a reinforced UHMWPE grid to ensure high tear resistance in the pack's most active areas.

UltraStretch Mesh was used for its exceptional shape recovery, ensuring external pockets won't sag or lose tension from heavy use. Its reinforced construction also provides superior snag resistance, making it more durable than traditional meshes in rugged environments.

Cord Loop Webbing allows for an easy and modular way for attachment points on a backpack. Having a versatile webbing allows for a sleek but technical function. This allowed for a running vest style sternum strap and accessory bag attachment points on the back of the bag.

Polyamide webbing is the ideal balance of being lightweight while having incredible tensile strength. Having a width of 20mm allows it to reduce bulk on straps while maintaining the required strength to carry heavy loads. The synthetic material allows easy gliding through ladder lock hardware.

Line lock hooks provide a fast way to tension and secure external gear, allowing you to cinch down loads or attach accessories with a single one-handed pull. Their integrated hook design allows them to snap directly onto cord loops ensuring a stable connection that remains tight even under heavy movement
